More inspiration from Steinlenn

This is also a copy of one of Steinlenn's works. I used watercolour pencils again, but this time put a wash over the top. I am really pleased with the depth of the flag. It has a good 3d effect. I was also pleased with the background. It's good to try out new materials, and I havne't really used watercolour pencils, with water very much. (Although I've had a set since I was a child! I still have it, and this is a mixture of those and the lovely new ones I got for my birthday!)

Inspired by Steinlenn

This is my version of what is probably Steinlenn's most famous work - a poster for the Chat Noir nightclub in Paris. I used watercolour pencils for this, and I think they've worked quite well. It was hard to get the red as consistent as I wanted it, but it was effective for the detailing around the cat's head.

Pastel pencils

This is a pastel pencil sketch of Nelson. It's the first time I've used pastel pencils, which were a birthday present. They are less messy than ordinary pastels but need careful sharpening.  Again I've used Steinlenn as an inspiration. He used pastels to good effect on a black cat. I'm discovering that you really have to look carefully to see the highlights. Working from photos helps. Nelson really does love to pose for the camera, which is good, because although he sleeps alot, when he is awake he's not still enough to draw!

Pencil sketch

Before the course started we were set the task of a summer sketch book on the theme 'On Location'. I was really reminded of Spring Watch where they always go over to Simon King 'on location' somewhere amazing. So I decided to make my cat Nelson my intrepid reporter, and record some of the locations of his life. This is a pencil sketch of one of his favourite locations - the sofa! I used the artist T A Steinlenn as inspiration. He did a lot of work which featured cats, including the sketches at the top of this page.

My First Post

OK, so I wanted to see how easy it was to set up a blog! And it was fairly easy! As I start my art course in just over a week's time, I thought I'd start a blog on my creative endeavours. I'm working on a sketchbook for the course with the theme On Location. I've taken some photographs so I'll get them posted once I work out how to do it!
